Preparing Your Winter Wardrobe

Let’s face it, it’s been a while since we’ve stood back and had a look at the state of our wardrobe. Even though it’s filled with the clothes we love, chaos is beginning to overtake the coordination we used to have. It’s time to reset, and once again organise our wardrobe in preparation for the cooler months ahead.

Cleaning Out Your Wardrobe

Simply put, to start your wardrobe rejuvenation, you will need to take everything out of it. This includes sneakers, accessories and other pieces of clothing hiding in your drawers or far reaches of your closet. Once everything is out and laid out on your bed, it’s time to clean.

It’s up to you how detailed your cleaning is, but at a minimum, you will want to dust all the surfaces. We figure that since everything is all out of the wardrobe, it’s also worth wiping down all the shelves and rails, while also giving the floor a quick vacuum.

If you haven’t done so already when taking your clothes out of your wardrobe, begin sorting them into different ‘types’. For example t-shirts, jumpers, jackets, pants and so on. Doing this now will make it easier to put your clothes away later on.

Understanding Your Winter Street Style

Before putting everything away and organising your wardrobe, have a think about your winter street fashion style. Whether it’s overalls, high-waisted jeans, fleece pants, puffy jackets, do you have any particular clothing that you love to wear in the winter? Keep these special pieces in mind when it comes to organising your wardrobe down the track.

Our favourite tip for winter street style is “always layer”. Not only does layering add depth and character to your outfit through different textures and colours, but it is also much easier to stay warm by putting on or taking off that extra layer. For example, starting with a t-shirt, you can easily layer a hoodie over it for warmth, with then a light jacket over the jumper to add to your street style. Complete it with your favourite denim and sneakers downstairs to conquer the cold.

Don’t forget to think about accessories when dressing for the cold. Beanies and scarves not only keep you warm, but they can also work as statement pieces to show off your unique style.

Storing & Donating Clothes

Go through your collection of clothes and consider whether you want to keep it or give it a new life by donating them. If you haven’t worn a particular piece in over a year, you’re not saving it for a special occasion or it doesn’t have sentimental value, it’s time to think about letting it go.

Once you know what you are keeping and what is being donated, let’s put your warm-weather clothing into storage until the temperature rises again. Clothes such as shorts, tank tops, summer dresses and anything else you don’t plan on wearing in the winter should be set aside.

Ideally, these clothes should be neatly folded and put into a storage tub for the time being. This way if it turns out you do want to wear them, it’s quick and easy to find them again.

Customising Your Wardrobe

Now the fun part, putting everything back in. Regardless of the type of wardrobe you have, the golden rule is to keep clothing you wear all the time easily accessible. For example, if denim overalls are an essential piece to your look, make them easy to grab compared to a bigger jacket that you might not wear as often. Keep this year’s winter streetwear favourites front and centre in your wardrobe.

Think about how you store your shoes as well. To increase the life of your sneakers, store them off the ground in a shoe rack or in their own drawer. Sneakers that you wear all the time, like your favourite pair of Chucks, should be at the front or top, while shoes that you don’t wear as often should stay towards the back.
