The Artist

We’ve partnered with Converse All Star, artist, activist and proud Gumbaynggirr woman Aretha Brown, on our second Converse City Forest mural in Melbourne (Naarm). Known for her activism as well as her art, Aretha was named the Prime Minister of the National Indigenous Youth Parliament in 2017 and uses her creativity as a vehicle to bring awareness to issues facing Indigenous and First Nations Peoples.

HOW THE PAINT WORKS

A revolutionary way to fight air pollution, we use a photocatalytic paint developed by Graphenstone containing technology that imitates nature. Just like the photosynthetic organisms that transform carbon dioxide into oxygen and organic matter thanks to sunlight, the paint absorbs atmospheric pollutants thanks to a chemical process activated by UV light. Basically, this smog eating paint is serious stuff!

LOCAL IMPACT

Converse CIty Forests plant trees where trees don’t grow. This mural is located at our Converse Fitzroy store on the corner of Kerr & Smith Streets, in bustling inner-city Melbourne. The mural absorbs enough air pollutants to plant the equivalent of 128 trees in the city of Melbourne. This number contributes to our global total of 7,223 trees, and counting!

THE ART

Through her art and activism, Aretha wants to change the narrative for Indigenous and First Nations peoples.

The design for this Converse City Forest Mural draws on multiple themes. It is a celebration of Aboriginal matriarchs and signifies the integral role of elders as a pillar for community, whilst also acknowledging the role of young mob and how Indigenous culture exists within modern life. As part of Aretha’s creative process, she consulted with Aboriginal Elder and well-known actor, Uncle Jack Charles to learn more about the Indigenous history of the area where the mural is painted and sought support for the project from Annette Xiberras, Wurundjeri elder. Aretha doesn’t paint alone and instead she likes to empower other young artists by forming her own ‘femme crew’ to help paint her larger scale artworks.

Education is a vital aspect to Aretha’s creative work, and for this project she has partnered with the National Indigenous Youth Education Coalition (NIYEC), whose work aims to mobilise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth to drive a new education ecosystem of their own design, and promote the message to ‘Teach Blak History’ in Australian schools.

    Step 1

    Stand up straight on a hard surface with your heel against the wall and a piece of blank paper taped to the floor, flush against the wall beneath your foot.

    Step 2

    Have someone mark the longest part of your foot (referred to as heel-to-toe length) on the paper with a pen or pencil, or measure yourself if necessary. Repeat with the other foot, as right and left sizes may be different.

    Step 3

    Use a ruler to measure the heel-to-toe length you marked for each foot.
