Skate Shoes Tech Explained
What originated as surfers attaching roller blade wheels to planks of wood, skateboarding has come a long way since its launch in the 1950s. As the sport evolved and grew, so did skating styles and tricks. Skaters needed footwear that was durable, comfortable and provided excellent board feel. These days, skate shoes have come leaps and bounds since their predecessors, like the original Chuck Taylor All Star, using new and exciting tech gained from other performance shoe styles. Discover the technology we use in our range of Converse skate shoes below.

Ortholite® Sock Liner

Utilising the latest sneaker insole technology, we use a dual-density Ortholite® sock liner for in our skate shoes. Not only does this provide exceptional comfort on and off the board, but their open-celled polyurethane (PU) design offers greater breathability and elasticity.

What does this mean for skaters? Those harsh impacts from tricks (like primos), grinds and drops are softened, reducing the strain across your feet by spreading the force of the impact, rather than centralising it. Likewise, the elasticity in the Ortholite® sock liner gives skaters better board feel while gripping their foot within the shoe.

Nike Zoom Air Bag

Located in the heel of our skate shoes, we have placed a Nike Zoom Air bag, similar to what we use in our basketball shoes. The Nike Zoom Air bag is created using tightly stretched tensile fibres which are then knitted inside the pressurised Nike Air unit. As the air bag is compressed, whether it’s from walking or jumping on the deck, the fibres spring back to their original state rapidly, creating an explosive rebound.

This provides skaters with responsive heel cushioning and further impact protection. The snappy rebound provided by the Nike Zoom Air bag is also useful for technical heel-based tricks, like heelflips and shove-its.
CONS Traction Rubber Sole

Although at a glance you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between our classic sneaker vulcanized rubber sole and our CONS traction rubber sole, there are some significant changes between the two. Compared to the traditional rubber sole, our CONS sole is made from a completely different rubber compound which offers better grip when you’re on the deck.

The CONS rubber sole also offers increased traction in the forefoot, making it easier to maneuver across the board and use your feet to flick and spin the deck for tricks. The outside of the CONS midsole has also been treated with the same high-grip texture, making it easier for you to control the board mid-trick, such as when performing crooked grinds and 50-50s.

Poly/Cotton Laces

With the extraordinary strains put on skate shoes when doing tricks, drops and grinds, the laces must be equally durable to the rest of the shoe. The last thing any skater needs is their laces snapping or fraying mid-trick. That’s why we use a highly durable, cotton-polyester laces with our skate shoes.

These laces combine subtle elasticity with a durable weave, allowing the skater’s foot to feel locked-in and secure while on the board.

Elasticised Tongue

Normally used in boots when attempting to make them waterproof, we decided to further improve upon the skate shoe’s tongue by making it gusseted. The gusseting structure, which uses breathable, elasticised mesh on the non-visible portion of the tongue, improves the comfort of the skate shoe by removing seams. The gusseted tongue also works to keep itself straight on the foot, rather than sliding around to the left or right when the foot moves.

When skating and performing tricks, your feet are constantly moving and adjusting for the board. Therefore, keeping the tongue in place while is not only important for comfort, but it also helps lock your feet into the shoe for a more secure fit and added board feel.

Reinforced Toe Cap

From Ollies to kickflips and even dropping into the bowl, your toes are key to fine-tuning and performing many tricks. On our skate shoes, we’ve further reinforced the toe caps with additional rubber and stitching, increasing their durability and giving the rider more protection in the front of the foot. This means your skate shoes won’t wear the toe box prematurely when doing tricks like 360 flips or frontside flips.

Sneakers vs Skate Shoes

While it might be tempting to grab a pair of sneakers when you want to go for a skate, there are several reasons why skate shoes are much better suited to the job:
