Why Do People Wear Converse Chuck Taylors to Lift Weights?

You’re in the gym. You’re sweating it out. The stresses of the day, that cheat meal you ate two days ago and still feel guilty about, the texts you still haven't replied to. All of it fades as you focus on the next set.

You look around and see the usual sights: dumbbells, plates, resistance bands. People in activewear, gym towels draped over shoulders. But one thing always stands out, no matter how often you see it — Converse Chuck Taylors.

Why do people wear Chucks to lift weights? Every time you spot a pair under a loaded barbell, the question pops up again.

And we get it. Surely there’s something better to wear for this kind of heavy lifting than a basketball shoe designed over a century ago. But despite the fact they seem more at home on the street than a squat-rack, Chuck Taylors have become a favourite for lifters around the world. Let’s take a closer look at why.

Before we go any further, though, let’s be clear: we’re not here to tell you what shoes to lift in. We’re simply exploring why so many people choose Converse Chuck Taylors for lifting weights. And what makes them a surprisingly common sight in gyms everywhere.

If your evenings revolve around lifting heavy, squatting low and pushing hard, you’re not thinking about style. You’re thinking about stability. You do this work so you’ll look good outside of the gym. Inside the gym, aesthetics are out and function is in. You want to make sure you’re doing what you can to keep your lifting form true and your body safe. And, to do that, you want to create a strong connection between your feet and the floor.

In that context, the ideal weight lifting shoe has a few key traits:

• Flat sole: This helps distribute your weight evenly across your feet, giving you a solid base to push from. Modern running shoes are designed for constant forward movement. You basically want the opposite when you’re lifting.

• Minimal cushioning: Running shoes are designed to absorb impact. That’s great for jogging, but when you’re lifting, that same padding can actually make you feel wobbly.

• Firm, grippy sole: A rigid rubber outsole keeps you planted and stops your feet from slipping during heavy lifts.

Lifters want to feel as close to the ground as possible. The less distance between your foot and the floor, the more efficiently you can transfer energy into the lift. That’s why you’ll often see people in purpose-built weightlifting shoes with hard, flat soles.

This is also where Converse Chuck Taylors come in. They’re not made for lifting, but they accidentally tick a lot of the same boxes.

Lauren Hutchinson, a personal trainer at South Yarra Strength with a Bachelor in Exercise and Sports Science from Deakin University and currently completing her Masters in Exercise Physiology, explains:

“Especially for leg exercises, you ideally want a shoe with a hard, flat sole. A flat surface that gives your feet good proprioceptive feedback, which means feeling where your feet are in space and how the pressure is distributed. And that’s important for lifting, because it helps you find your center of mass. That kind of ground contact improves stability for squats, deadlifts, and other lifts. I’ve tried a few different pairs and brands, but nothing compares to Converse Chuck Taylors for that flatness and stability”

It’s one of the most common questions you’ll see online: “Are Converse good for lifting?” The short answer is — it depends on what you’re lifting and what feels comfortable for you.

From a purely functional standpoint, Converse Chuck Taylors can work well for certain types of lifts because of their flat, stable sole. When you’re doing exercises like deadlifts or flat-footed squats, that solid base can help you stay balanced and push evenly through your feet. There’s no soft foam to compress, which means more direct force transfer from the ground up.

However, they’re not a perfect solution for every lifter or every movement.

• For deadlifts: Chucks can be a decent option. The thin sole keeps you close to the floor, which many lifters prefer because it shortens the range of motion slightly and provides better control.

• For squats: It depends on your squat style. Some lifters prefer a raised-heel weightlifting shoe to help keep their torso more upright and engage the quads more effectively. Chucks, by contrast, are completely flat — which may feel better for low-bar squats or lifters with good ankle mobility.

• For other lifts: Exercises that involve movement, balance, or agility (like lunges or power cleans) might feel more comfortable in something designed for training.

Lauren Hutchinson adds, “They’re comfortable and easy to put on and take off, which is perfect for the gym. The cushioning is soft enough without being too soft; Your feet don’t move around inside the shoe, so you feel safe and sturdy. Plus, they’re stylish. They’re really versatile. You can go for a walk in them, but for lifting, they’re excellent. I’ve worn my Converse in the gym for the last five years. I’ve tried other styles, but I always come back to my Chucks.”

It’s also worth remembering that Converse shoes weren’t designed as weight lifting shoes. They were designed for basketball, decades before modern gym footwear even existed. They don’t have the structured support or specific features you’ll find in purpose-built squat or deadlift shoes.

So while Chucks might be good enough for lifting weights for some people, they’re not necessarily the best or safest choice for everyone.

While there might be other options out there, which are purpose-built, custom-made for lifting, squatting, stretching and extending, why are people still choosing to step into the gym in their well-loved Chuck Taylors?

The humble Chuck Taylor ticks a few boxes for lifting weights and, for some people, that’s good enough. Not everyone has the means to have a shoe for cardio, a shoe for lifting, and a shoe for the rest of the day. When your cherished weekend sneaker also offers some stability in the gym, it’s tempting to lace up your Chucks and sweat out your Tuesday night routine.

It all comes down to personal circumstance. And, for a lot of people, their Chucks are more than just a shoe. They’ve been with them through every stage; from their first sessions to their current PBs. It’s not just a shoe, but a supportive companion on the long journey.

That’s the thing about a shoe that never really goes out of style. It’s always there for you, no matter what goals you’re chasing.
