Anatomy of Jack Purcell Sneakers

Remaining true to its 1930s design, the Jack Purcell sneaker has undergone only minor evolutions since its introduction. The latest update occurred in 2015, where the sneaker received 18 style tweaks inside and out, bringing the sneaker into modern times.

Among the upgrades, the Jack Purcell sneaker is now available in three different uppers: twill, leather and suede. It’s timeless design also features:

The Jack Purcell sneaker is best known for its casual refinement and celebration of personal style.

History of Jack Purcell Sneakers

Design by John Edward “Jack” Purcell, one of the greatest badminton players of all time, the story of the Jack Purcell sneaker follows a similar path to Chuck Taylor and the All Star.

After taking up badminton in 1924, Purcell quickly rose through the amateur ranks in Ontario, Canada, to become Canada’s National Badminton Champion between 1929 and 1930. Following his success at home, in the following years, Jack Purcell had defeated all the top-ranking players from the UK, US and Canada, where he was declared as the Badminton World Champion.

Although he was challenged on many occasions, Purcell remained the World Champion from 1933 up until his retirement in 1945.

In 1935, two years after becoming the World Champion, Purcell became increasingly frustrated with his current badminton footwear and sought to create his own. Purcell’s final design was an all-white, low-top canvas and rubber sneaker that featured a steel shank in the heel for added support.

For most of the 20th century, the Jack Purcell sneaker was worn by everyone from professionals to beginners, as they were mandatory for all-grass, clay and asphalt courts. The rubber sole featured a herringbone design, which did not ruin the court’s surfaces and was nicknamed “Blue Tips” or “Smiles” from the blue curved “smile” piping on the toe.

Due to his contributions and success in the sport, he was inducted into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1955 and Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame in 1973, even though he never played in The Games.

Jack Purcell Sneaker in Pop Culture

Having shifted from the courts to become a popular streetwear icon, the subtle design of the Jack Purcell sneaker is a favourite piece of footwear for those looking to combine simplicity with their own unique style.

James Dean was known to don Jack Purcell sneakers in his downtime, while in the 1970s, Steve McQueen, “The King of Cool”, was famously known for wearing a pair of all-white Jack Purcell sneakers with his more casual outfits.

In recent years, celebrities such as Selena Gomez, Sir Elton John, Jennifer Aniston, Psy, and Orlando Bloom have all been spotted in Jack Purcell sneakers off-camera.
